I have only one phone line in my house. And my kids are always surfing
the net. So when I call home most of the time I get a busy signal. Is
there a setting that will allow incoming calls to disconnect a internet
connection. I worry about emergencies and not getting through.

If you have call waiting and you are getting a busy signal when you dial-in
while the modem is in use, your dial string (ATD...) contains *70 to disable
call-waiting command. That will have to be removed from the dial string.

The V.92 standard supports a pause-for-call waiting. It will pause the
Internet traffic for the call and resume once the incoming call has been
disconnected. If you have a V.92 modem, which you may be able to confirm in
the Device Manager, and your ISP supports V.92 connections then you should
be able to make use of this feature.

Excuse me for butting in, but perhaps this too will be useful.

I have an Agere modem and by pure chance I found that they ship as part
of the "package" that got installed on my PC a utility LTMOH.EXE. It is
a utility that, if you have call waiting and call waiting callerID,
will pop up a pane on the PC, showing an incoming call and the
callerID. Yo ucan then choose to answer the call or to ignore it.

I moved the program to my Start Folder and it works like a charm.

Some newer modems have a feature called, "Modem On Hold." This allows
you to switch to an incoming call without losing your internet
connection. Some of these modems may be able to switch automatically.
I don't know for sure because I have had a broadband connection for
three or four years now. If you can, get broadband. Then you won't
have the phone line tied up at all.
