Can Activate my copy of Windows XP, but cannot get it verified

P

Papa

I just reformatted and re-installed my Windows XP Pro operating system.
Getting through the activation process was a snap, but when I tried to
download some of the Microsoft Updates, the first thing I encountered was a
"Validation" test. Instead of getting whatever it is that Microsoft wants
validated, I got a message that says "Validation Incomplete: Unable to
Perform Validation".

I have a legitimate retail version of Windows XP Pro, purchased at a
reputable computer store. This problem did not occur the first time I
installed this copy of Windows. In fact, I don't remember a "Validation"
test even occurring.

Why will it easily activate, yet now, for some reason, cannot be validated
when I try to access updates?

Activation is normal, however microsoft has a new "validation" process
one must go thru now.Try downloads at microsoft, select one with the *
after it,follow the validation wizard. Also, after completed you might just
mention that to microsoft, use the "contact us" at the bottom of microsoft
home page..

Ah, MS is trying to sell you another copy of Windows that you really
don't need, and is hoping you are foolish enough to do so.

Read how sleasy MS really is, using the possibility of unlicensed
computers to drum up more business.

Yeah, I tried dropping a post in the "Windows Genuine Advantage Newsgroup"
but it won't let me log in.....keps saying something about the display name
has already been taken.

Anyway, I'm having a similar issue when trying to download some updates.
One of my clients has a PC with XP Pro (SP2) installed. She has an OEM
sticker on the side and I'm guessing it's a good key. However, she has the
little icon in the tray says she's not ligit. I even went and changed the
registry to "unactivate" her copy of windows and tried to reactivate it.
After it failed, I decided to use the "change key" feature. I dropped in the
key that was stuck on the side of the PC and still no joy! Frankly I'm
curious to find out EXACTLY what we have installed on the PC! My company
built it and, as I said, there's an OEM sticker on the side. Every tool I
use just says I have XP Pro. I need to find out if it's truely OEM....maybe
she (or someone else) has went over it with RETAIL, UPGRADE, VOLUME LISENCE,
ect. How can I find out, EXACTLY, what version is one here? This will help
me to match her up with a key or make me reload her PC. They have many disks
stacked in their closet. They have a disk for every PC there and I'm not
worried about the licenses, as they have them. I just want to get everyone
matched up with THEIR license & get them downloading all the updates, ect.

Again, I want to find a way to figure out the EXACT version of Windows XP
Pro installed on a machine.

I would perform a clean install with one of their OEM disks and the OEM key
on the side of the computer. It sounds like there have been too many cooks
in the kitchen at this point. This will get you to a known good point. If
you still have WGA problems after doing this contact Microsoft directly. The
OEM COA on the side of the computer may be either counterfeit or stolen from
a large OEM. Both possibilities are quite common.

I had a service company repair my machine last year and reload Win XP Pro
without my CD that came with the new OEM machine. Now I have the same trouble
everyone else has as far as getting messages that I have a invalid copy of
Win XP Pro. I want to reload with my CD and read in some discussion group
that this could be done using the COA instead of the product key. Is this
true? Also I don't want to do anything complicated, as I'm not really good at
this and do not want to lose any of my files. Is there some site that can
walk me through the re-load, install process?
