URGENT - Activation - invalid ID

Suddenly, my three year old copy of XP Pro that's been on the same
machine all the time, comes up with this message on log-in:
"A problem has occurred with Windows accurately checking the validity of the
Licence on this computer. To proceed your copy of Windows must be activated
with Microsoft"

I press Yes for activation - it fails internet activation, I get a new ID,
enter the numbers in the phone and it gets accepted. I enter the new ID
numbers in the boxes, click "Next" and then get a message saying the ID is
not valid.

Why should this happen and how do i fix it? I can't log on to the computer
because it just goes round in circles.

Yes, thanks I'd seen that - unfortunately it seems that the option to speak
to a real person only appears if the automated telephone activation fails as
well. The telephone activation only failed locally and not according to the
activation server so I never got the chance to speak to a real human being!
However, I seem to have sorted it by doing a complete re-install.
Fortunately the machine is only used in the main for Skype (as it's the only
machine wired into the network) and contained little or no data of any
worth...

So the issue of XP forgetting it was activated (why and how to resolve
it) remains unresolved.
