Can 98 be networked to XP?

My computer is running XP, but my parents is still on 98. They are both
hooked to the same router so we can use Road Runner. I'd like to be able to
share files and printers between them though. How can I put them together?

Yes. You can indeed network computers running Windows 98 and Windows XP. If
you activate the Guest account on both computers, each should be able to access
shares on the other. Do each of you trust the other completely?

There can be a problem with using Network Neighborhood between the two. Only
run the browser (and I'm not discussing Internet Explorer here) on one computer.

But assuming both computers have IP connectivity, both can use NetBIOS Over TCP
for Windows Networking, and there should be no problem. Make sure that NetBT is
explicitly Enabled though.

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers. It will make all the
necessary settings to enable sharing, share all printers, and create a
Shared Documents folder. You can manually share other disks and
folders, as desired.

If the XP computer doesn't have a floppy disk drive and you don't have
a Windows XP CD, copy the Wizard file to a CD-R or USB flash drive on
XP and run it on 98:

C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe
