Im using a dialup modem which provides internet acess for 2 computers. It
uses the fax house hold line. It is connected most of the time and this is a
problem because people generally need to call us to ask to send a fax lol. My
question is is there a way to make the internet disconnect when a fax is
being sent. Is there a way to make the modem drop the line when a call is
recieved another word is lol.
Any feedback on this matter much appriciated!
thanks to all

That is why I changed to Broadband.

I previously had my phone on the same line - as I was on the Internet a lot
of the time I would not be able to receive phonecalls.

I presume that you don't receive many faxes as otherwise you would already
be working differently - if there was a means of interrupting it could mean
that two computers could have their Internet access interrupted at any
moment by an incoming fax.

At the speed of download on Narrowband to have the Internet connection
interrupt the download of a large file from the Internet or the receipt of a
number of emails (with possible large attachments) to eg Outlook Express
would be a great inconvenience - as these would have to start all over
again.

I would suggest that you keep your current arrangement where the two
computers are disconnected from the Internet - and the fax machine be set up
for receipt of the fax.

Whether it is technically possible - but it doesn't seem like a good idea.

I remember that the audible "beep" you get when you have call-waiting was
enough to kick my modem offline rather rudely and without warning... :-)

That would disconnect you, but wouldn't re-establish the connection
afterwards. Maybe change your automatic redial settings to wait 30 seconds,
or whatever it takes to transfer a fax?

I dunno, just throwing some ideas...

I couldn't fnd a brand of fax modem switch, so providing pictures of
bunches of them show that they were available.

Guess it wouldn't of hurt to pass on this one...

As you used tinyurl.com this totally escaped us (I used the plural because I
thought the same).

I have a maths (math) degree and when I was at school (high school, US) in a
Physics test, my maths teacher said about my test sheet (which consisted of
mathematical proofs which were perfect - but there was no explanatory
text) - that it wasn't a maths exam.

Likewise, a bit of explanation would have not gone amiss.

I am not quite sure how this helps if someone is already logged on to the
Internet - presumably the phone line will show that the phone line is
engaged.

I have the "problem" that I would like to occasionally use my computer as a
fax - whilst also linked to it by Broadband.

I used to do this occasionally when I was on Narrowband. If I was expecting
a fax call, I would have the computer linked up to the phone socket and when
the fax called my line, either it would automatically be switched to the
computer - or I could I click something to accept it.

Now I don't bother with receiving fax. If anyone has any ideas that would
allow me to accept fax calls via the phoneline while also connected to
Broadband.

This would mean using the two different modems.

I have raised this in another group and the suggestion has been so
complicated that I haven't bothered.

It won't I misread the question...

send the modem the command ATS10=8

Work with the 8 raising it or lowering it to fit you purpose.

S10 is the setting that determines how long you modem stays connected
when line trash is received (a ring is line trash).

S10=255 is an setting to keep you connect at all times (you can pick
up the phone on this one, and not disconnect)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q124890/
you can also put the S10 command in the modem properties

I didnt gather too much from the 9 replies i got, maybe because im quite sick
at the moment, but ill answer to what i did lol.

Call waiting is not an option dad has issues with it and even if he didnt id
never get him off his ass and getting it enabled lol. Also broadband is not
an option so cut that out. Ive spent many months bitching to telecom but they
have problems with outdated exchanges or something i dno.

Wireless also isnt an option cuz its setup fee is chronic in Newzealand, and
the monthly fee for wireless is not cool. The cheapest wireless option, costs
the same as the most expensive broadband option, and is worse than the
cheapest broadband option.
thanks for all the feedback though :D

Have them e-mail you when they want to send a fax or scan the document
and e-mail the image ( pseudo-fax )

lol its easier for them to call my other line and tell me.. or cell phone lol.
Nevermind ill just leave it disconected during the day
Thanks for everybodys help - much appriciated :)
