Cached Mode

I have been using Office 2007, Outlook 2007 since its release. recently had
to reload my laptop and when completing the initial setup of Outlook I
noticed that the "Cached Mode" selection was "greyed" out. I have tried to
manually create an .ost and point the account to it with no luck. I have
completely uninstalled the Office Pro 2007 product and tried a new install.
"Cached mode" is still unavailable. Any ideas?

It could be disabled as a policy by your system administrator. Have you
asked him/her about this already?

I am the senior engineer in the system engineering group, I built the domain
controller and the sexchange server. No policy installed. Prior to the
laptop rebuild "cached moded" was available... now it is "greyed" out.

Sorry Roady... I ment to say I built the Domain controller(s) and the
exchange server. Not sure MS has the sexchange server out for general release
yet.

Nice typo ;-)

I assume this is not a Terminal Server or Remote App installation? In those
cases Cached Exchange Mode is not available.

Is it available when you create a new mail profile?
See http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm

Is it available when you configure it with a new user on that machine?
(create a test account if no other account exists yet)

Not TS... and installing local on my laptop... from a "select" DVD media.
Installing the same way I have always installed Outlook clients in the past.
Prior to rebuilding my laptop I had the same v Outlook (2007). Running Vista
"Business"... latest patches and updates. Interesting note... In past
installs of Outlook... process would include creating profile... selecting MS
Exchange server... entering server, cache mode and mailbox... now process is
profile... and next screen is pre-populated with FQDN of email server and my
mailbox. "Cache mode" is greyed out.

Outlook 2007 can configure itself based on Active Directory information. If
you select it to manually configure your mail profile, can you enable it
then?

No... I have tried... "cached mode" selection is unavailable. I have just
completely uninstalled Office Pro 2007... Ran "Windows Install Cleanup" tool.
Searched local drives and removed all inferences of "Office" products.
Removed "Visio 2003". Reinstalled Office 2007... recreated Outlook profile...
still no "Cache mode" available.
????????????????????????????????????????????????

And when you logon as a different user?
Are there any policy keys listed here?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0

Found toggle in reg
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office12.0\Outlook\OST

"NoOST" DWORD value set to "2", changed to "1" and cache mode now available.
What would cause this option to be "Unavailable"?

Thanks for the help Roady!

You're welcome! :)
That very setting controls if you can use ost-files or not and since Cached
Exchange Mode creates an ost-file, its behavior is affected by this policy
setting.
I suggest you verify your GPO if this was not intended.
