cable to link laptop to TV set?

I use my laptop TV out (serial) port to link my laptop to a proyector
using a serial Tv cable with IN/OUT connector being the same (serial or
look like mini serial sockts).

However when I link it to a TV set I don't get any image on the TV
screen.
I tried a S-video out on my laptop linked to the S-video on the TV and
I don't get any image on the TV either.

Do I need a special cable (other than S-video on both sides or serial
tv out/RGB in?
