Cable Modem probs

Hello! At home, we have had a cable modem which worked just fine for 2 or 3
years. However, this summer, things began going downhill. I am trying to
figure out if it is the wiring in our house leading to the modem or possibly
something with our computer, and I need your suggestions please. We have
tried 2 different hubs and 2 different cable modems and the same thing
happens. Sporadically, the cable light on the modem will either go out
completely, flicker off and on, or turn red (it is
supposed to be solid green). It will go for a few days just fine, then the
problem will start again and we will be without internet service for several
days. The cable guy has been out 4 times and tried different things. Could
it possibly be something in our computer making this happen, like the
connection of the wire which goes to the hub? It seems tight, and I have
tried different wires. I have even tried hooking the cable modem up directly
to the computer and bypassing the hub. Still happens. By the way, our main
computer is running Windows XP. The other computer is Win 98. I am not very
hardware savvy, so I'd really appreciate your help!
Thanks!

Nothing your computer does will affect your cable modem
like that.

The symptoms you describe are typical of either:

a) A bad cable line from your cable modem to the cable
box on the house.
b) A malfunctioning cable modem
c) A malfunctioning power supply that's hooked to your
cable modem
d) Poor signal levels or other trouble on your cable
company's end

It's nothing to do with your computer or connection to
the hub. You may be better off reading the forums at
http://www.dslreports.com and/or continuing to work with
your cable company.
