C82 Epson destroyed by compatible ink cartridge

I've used "compatible" ink cartridges in my Canon S450, i550, and
i560 for some time now, with no problems at all. I recently tried
a compatible black cartridge from the same company in a C82, and the
print quality gradually deteriorated until a couple of days later
there was no ink coming out at all. I replaced the black cartridge
with an original Epson cartridge, and still get no black at all.
I did a lot of cleaning cyles, so naturally a couple of the color
cartridges ran out. I replaced them with "compatible" cartridges.
So, those colors stopped working too. I would blame the Chip that
Epson uses in its cartridges, but that wouldn't explain why the new
Epson black cartridge doesn't work. The company I got the ink from
seems to have a good reputation.

Any thoughts? Has anyone had a similar problem with this printer
(or any Epson printer) and determined whether it was bad ink
or something about the chip? Is there something that has to
be reset if a cartridge with a bad chip causes a problem?

Some companies have notoriously ignored the fact that Epson C80/C82 printers
require pigmented inks: so why not name them ??
It simply means the apparent cheapest is not the best.

Maybe you can salvage the printer by taking a weak ammonia solution on
a pad and stuffing in where the cartridge goes for a few hours, then
run a couple cleaning cycles. Either that, or clean out the culprit
cartridge and fill it with the same cleaning solution etc.
