I'm really hitting a roadblock here with this blue screen error. MS site
says to get the most recent service pack update for XP but I have service
pack 2 and I believe that is the most current. I ran Win update and it says
I'm up to date.

Alternatively Windows help says: "To work around this problem, rename the
computer so that it is one character shorter. If you do so, the FQDN is less
than 200 characters long and the heap corruption does not occur. " I don't
have a clue how to do this.

My computer will only boot up in safe mode which is how I'm writing you now.
Can someone help me resolve this error and guide me to what I need to do to
fix it?

Please read:

You might try logging on as Administrator in Sae Mode and create a new User
Profile for yourself.

It would be helpful for you to post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

I've read everything on this error. I've tried all suggestions. I still get
the error and I still can only get into safe mode. I looked at my log and
nothing new was installed or downloaded in the days prior to this error
starting last night. I have emails into both Dell and Microsoft support. I
don't know what else to do. A search here shows a lot of people have had
this same error. They've gotten the same suggestions I have, but never came
back to say if the error was fixed for them, or not. I'd like to know what
finally worked for them.

To shorten the name of the computer, open System Properties, click
Computer Name tab, click the "Change" button, and shorten the name.

Did you try a System Restore Point? How about a repair install?
