C: WINDOWS/SYTEM32 (MSDOS Cannot Run) etc., after SP2 and updates?

All of a sudden my scanner no longer is recognized by XP???

Can't even uninstall and re-install software, XP will no longer recognize it
or run it.

What's going on at Microsoft?
 
Does it still detected by Windows even if it's an unknown device?
