Help! Scanner has stopped being recognized

Hi,

Does anyone know what to do when your scanner stops being recognized
by your computer. I get the error message: no communication with
scanner, check cables, etc.

However, I've uninstalled the hardware, software, restarted,
reinstalled. And nothing. Device manager alerts that it found new
hardware but the scanner doesn't pop up in device manager and then it
alerts me that the hardware installation had problems.

Ack!

I have windows xp, use a canon mp500 all in one, however bought a
separate canon lide 90 scanner to see if the mp500 was just broken,
but my computer won't recognize either scanner. Note, mp500 still
will print and copy, but won't scan.

thankyou, help and advice is greatlly appreciated!

Disconnect the scanner, uninstall the software.
Look for folder associated with scanner that contains 'Twain' files,
if the folder still exist after the uninstall, then delete files and folder.
Reboot PC.

Check 'Device Manager' to verify scanner is no longer seen.
(If it's still there remove it and reboot)

Most scanners require that you install the software before connecting the
scanner,
so re-install scanner software and then power down the PC and reconnect the
scanner.

Thanks for the advice. I've done that and I keep getting this message
when i go to file import in photoshop:

"cannot communicate with scanner.
cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off.
check status.
scanner driver will be closed."

My usb ports are working properly. my all-in-one printer is working
fine, except for the scanner because i get the same message like above
too, and the new scanner i bought, i'm assuming is new and in working
order too.

Do you think its a virus i have?

thanks for your help!

Did the scanner come with any software (not Photoshop) that you can use to
test scan a document or photo into the PC?
