i have xpsp1a home edition installed. i am considering a major overhaul
because it has started to play up in a number of ways recently and trying to
diagnose the problem is driving me around the bend.

symptoms are;
hanging at the welcome screen when logging on, it sits for two minutes
before finally playing the piano tune and bringing up the desktop;
system tray then takes ages to load up;
applications don't open visibly but when you shut the computer down it says
'you have chosen to end program' etc etc;
chkdsk /f /r don't appear to fix a problem .....................

i tried to slipstream my winxp cd into my service pack files to create a
bootable sp1a cd but that don't work either saying 'some or all of the files
failed to be copied to the.......'. i've done this in the past without probs
so i'm stuck because the solution seems to be way above my level of
expertise.

wfp doesn't seem to do it's job either.

get the idea???

so this is what i'm thinking of doing and any advice would be
appreciated......

uninstalling service pack 1a; cleaning hdd, deleting all but last restore
points, chkdsk /r and then defrag.... then doing a repair installation of
windows xp from my original home edition cd, and then re-installing sp1a.
