XP pro 64 will not execute programs

Hi

I switched my PC on yesterday and CHKDSK ran, made some changes,
rebooted and since then the majority of programs on my machine will
not run. I get a message that it failed to start because the
'application configuration is incorrect' and that a re-install may
cure it. I also get the same message when trying to run the
install.exe to re-install the program.

Chkdsk logged the following information:

Now, whenever I try to run something, it logs sidebyside errors in the
event log to the effect that -

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SideBySide

Time: 09:49:51
User: N/A

Description:

found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on

I have searched in the C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Policies folder and the
x86_policy.5.82.Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_x-
ww_65777D82 does not exist although some similarly named ones are
there.

From this I think that CHKDSK has deleted\removed files which has
caused the majority of my programs to stop working (even this message
has been posted using the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer because
the 32 bit one errors).

Can any one tell me how I can get things working again please because,
as it stands now, browsing the internet is all that it will allow me
to do?

Hi

I managed to sort out the problem so I thought I'd put it here in case
anyone else had a similar problem.

I found a folder called 'x86_policy.5.82.Microsoft.Windows.Common-
Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_x-ww_65777D82' in 'C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS
\setuppolicies' with a policy file in it. I copied the whole folder
and contents into the 'C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Policies' folder and the
problem was cured.
