Hard Disk problem

Hello, today when I started my computer (XP Pro Sp2 updated) it gave an
error about a corrupt file and said to run chkdsk. I ran it, found
problems so ran it again with /f. It apparently corrected the errors.
The computer restarted, I ran chkdsk inside Windows again and it found
another error. I ran in it again with /f after restart and corrected.
It restartaed, ran again and found no errors.
Now I ran it again inside XP and if found this errors:

The thing is that if I run it again with /f it corrects something, then
runs again, says the disk its fine and boots into XP. And inside XP it

Any ideas about this error?

You do not say what brand of HHD you have, but most manufacturers have a
program that will analyze the HHD. I know for a fact Western Digital does
as I just had a HHD failure and to get the HDD replaced they required that I
run the analysis. It was easy to do and took only a few minutes.
With this info in hand, WD immediately replaced my HHD.

I suggest you try to find the analyzing program for your HHD. It is not a
bad idea to run this program occasionally anyway.

I just tried it again and running it inside XP gave me:

Go to http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/ and download the Seagate tool
(as per Jerry's suggestion) to diagnose whether your disk is on the way out.
I've not used their tools but if they are anything like the ones I have used
then it should be clear whether the disk drive is faulty. If the drive is
faulty then you need to get it replaced.

What you've indicated so far sounds to me like a duff drive. I suggest you
take a copy of all your key files so that you at least have a backup if it
does finally die on you.

Firstly, the output you posted doesn't seem to indicate a drive failure (but
anyone else out there who thinks I'm wrong please but in!!). Did I get the
impression that it did a quick test and that a longer one is available - if
so try running that.

Regarding chkdsk. I find chkdsk better than anything else available.

Try, after you've backed up key files (re my previous posting) and done the
longer disk check:

chkdsk c: /r

the /r flag (as opposed to the /f flag) fixes errors and then does a disk
check of every sector - it takes an age, but if there are areas of the disk
which are going bad (an indication itself of disk problems) then this will
find them.

Something else to try - possibly before the above - check that all the disk
cables are snugly in place. If a cable is a little loose then it might give
you intermittent problems.

Hope this helps. I know how horrible it can be with disks fail.

I did all the tests available including the long one.
I will check first about the cables.
I will try again tonight(Im not home now) to do the chkdsk c: /r. I
will post back results as soon as i have them (probably in 12 hours).

Be aware that with the /r option chkdsk takes ages and ages and ages ... you
get the picture.

Delete all partitions and repartition, format and reload. If the problem
persists junk the harddrive. If it persists on a new drive, junk the
motherboard, the hdd controller is broke. Now you have two good harddrives
and a new motherboard.
