C: for storage

Hi Yall
Got a question here, may sound silly.
My son stores all his personall files and folders under C: , instead of my
documents.
He must have at least 50 folders of personal data under C:.
Is that ok or a bad idea.
I told him that is what the My Document folder was for.
Dose that create a problem for windows or doesen't matter.
Thanks

It doesn't really matter, but be careful not to accidentally erase the data. Also, take care if you restore the system using System Restore; it is recommended that you store all your personal files into the 'Documents' folder of each user profile or the data could be lost after the restoration.

Unless you moved "My Documents" somewhere - it is stored on Drive "C" -
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents to be exact.

Is it bad?
Only if your son values his data and doesn't make backups.. Otherwise -
unless you start running short of space - no - it's fine.

Although that's what My Documents is for, it doesn't really matter. If what
he does works for him, and he's happy with it, there's no real disadvantage
and it doesn't matter.

Backups would be easier if the 50 folders were under one folder.

*If* he backs up just his data, I agree. But some of us regularly backup the
whole drive, and it doesn't matter.

If they are in separate folders within C:, and not in the root directory
C: itself, then no problem.

It's a better idea to do what he does than to put them all in My
Documents. However, a better idea is for him to create a folder called
"hisname", on C:, and then create/copy his 50 folders to c:\hisname

Personal file storage should at least occur on another physical hard drive.
External or removable media is a better choice. Multiple instances on
multiple locations are even better.

Alternately, using the local XP partition is okay, but leaves you open for
loss or data extraction in an environment outside of windows.

The My documents folder is specific to each user and offers some degree of
privacy. And is one of many default sources for pulling personal settings
and data from one PC to another in XP.

Windows does not care where the user puts his/her personal folders and
files.
