User's Documents Folder not visible in My Computer

R

Richard A. King

I am the administrator user of my PC, Windows XP Pro, SP3.

I have user accounts set up for family members, all limited.

Recently while helping one of my son's to scan photographs ( We had to use
my account to do the scan, as the scanner is fairly old and there are no
updated drivers for it. Consequently, it only works in my account). We were
having problems working with the photos when we copied them to "His Documents
| His Pictures" folders. We eventually worked around the problem by resaving
them as JPG files insted of Tiff.

During this exercise, I noticed that when I double click My Computer on my
desktop, His Documents are not listed under "Files Stored On This Computer".
All other users are listed. The folder also does not appear in Windows
Explorer after Shared Documents and then the list of the other users of the
PC.

His Documents folder DOES show under "C:\Documents and Settings\His Name"

I have right clicked both his and another users documents folders and
compared properties, (General / Sharing / Security) and all seem to be the
same.

I am unsure if the fact His Documents are invisible as described above was a
factor in the problems we had working on the photos, but I would like to try
and sort this out.

He probably made his files private and this is nothing to be concerned
about. You were probably having difficulties because your scanner program
will only work in an administrative account. This is common for older
software/hardware drivers.

In the future, if you don't want to replace the scanner with a new one that
doesn't need to run under administrative accounts, just put the scanned
items in Shared Documents. Your son can then access the files when he's
logged into his account.

Yes, we have already figured out a work around.
However your answer does not explain why this users documents folder does
not appear in My Computer under "Files Stored on this COmputer" or in Windows
Exlorer.

As I said in my original post, we did manage to work around the problem with
the photos.
However, your reply does not explain why this particular user's "Documents"
folder does not appear in My Computer under Files Stored On this Computer, or
in Windows Explorer

I found a better answer at:

'Putting Back My Documents in Files Stored on This Computer -
TechSpot Troubleshooting' (http://tinyurl.com/nr5tfx)

They give 2 answers. The first involves changing the registry. I
used the 2nd which is to just move the offending My Documents using
the properties dialogue then restore it to the default. I did this
from within the user account that had the problem.

I had known my problem wasn't caused by a user setting the files to
private because I was the user of all the accounts, both limited and
administrator, and I also double checked.

This problem showed up just 1 day after I created the limited
accounts "TV" and "Data". The one named "Data" had the problem. I
use Open Office Org Base in "Data" but not in "TV". Could it be
that Open Office Org removes the needed registry entry? Does
King's son use Open Office Org while other users don't? I hope
someone can figure out why this happened. My computer doesn't show
any virus and again, I had just created the accounts the day before.

Better than what? You have quoted nothing of the original message.

If it wasn't for Google - your message would make no sense. Clarification -
if it wasn't for Google and knowing how to use it, your message would make
no sense.
