User file locations

First let me say that my computer knowledge is limited to spreadsheets and
Word documents, with a general knowledge of other computer functions.

I have Windows XP on my home computer that is used by my son, my wife and
myself. My son accidentally deleted his login and account. I created a new
one for him but now his files are located in "C:\Documents and
Settings\Bobby.BOBBY\My Documents". Previously they were located in
"C:\Documents and Settings\Bobby\My Documents".

Is there some place where I can go to change the path back to the old one?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

You can change it here:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
It may subsequently be necessary for an Administrator to grant full access
to "C:\Documents and Settings\Bobby" for Bobby.

Thank you for the reply. Regretfully I am still unable to correct this
problem. As I stated, I am really a novice at making Windows XP corrections.
I have spent over an hour working on this. I do not see any way that I can
get to the path (?) "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" that you specify in your reply. Am I doing
something wrong?

Also, I received an e-mail notice that you had replied. The two links in
the e-mail to get back to your reply did not work. Am I doing something
wrong there too?

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Few if any respondents quote a genuine EMail address in their
replies. Most are fake (including mine) so that we don't become
the target of spammers.

It sounds as if you have no experience in hacking the registry.
This is not a particularly good starting point - if you do the
wrong thing in the registry then you can easily wreck your
machine. I recommend that you get a friend with appropriate
experience to assist you. Here is what you need to do while
logged on as Administrator.

1. Create a System Restore point so that you can go back if necessary.
2. Click Start / Run / regedit.exe {OK}
3. Navigate to this location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\
4. Examine each of the keys in ProfileList by looking at "ProfileImagePath"
on the right-hand side, until you find the one that contains the current
unwanted profile path ( Bobby.Bobby).
5. Double-click that ProfileImagePath.
6. Change its tail end to the name of the old profile folder and press
Enter.
7. Check the permissions of the old profile folder. Does the account "Bobby"
have full access to it? If not then grant him that access.

Why doesn't he just use System Restore to roll back to a pre existing
restore point that predates this mess?

I'm not sure whether it will help in his case but it's worth
a try. It certainly won't hurt because System Restore is
fully reversible.

And I just suspect it may be the simplest way out of this.
