My son uses my machine, XPPROSP2, for his games.

Although he can login and has his own desktop he suddenly no longer appears
in :\Documents and Settings. What happened?

Only administrators can see other user's files and folders.
If you're a limited user, you can only see your own files
and folders, and those that are shared amongst all users.

Curiouser and Curiouser. I created a new user in User Accounts. No Problem
and it shows in User Accounts/ Not in Documents and Settings.

No directories are created for an account until you log in for the first time. Did you do that with
your test account?

Check the 'ProfilesDirectory' value under this key:

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList"

Also check the value named 'ProfileImagePath' under the subkeys with the long identifiers
(S-1-5-21-1454471165-1563985344-1417001333-1003). Each one is for a partcular user.

Keith?

I created a new user, logged into that new account, created a few new files
on that user's desktop, accessed those files, logged back to an admin
account, looked in Docs&Settings, but no new user.

Additionally, a Search for one of those newly created files can't find it!

Help!

Nope. It was the "xxyyzz" account. Same thing on the "plugh" account!

Log back on to that new account.

Right-click the 'My Documents' on the desktop -- What is the target folder location?

Set explorer to show the full path in the address bar. Right-click the Start button & select
'Open'. What is the path to the user's Start Menu Folder?

A rein of mine in PSS suggested logging into that account in Safe Mode,
creating a directory on the user's Desktop, then create a file within that
directory, then make that file sharable, then logout, then log back in, then
delete that directory and its file.

It worked!

How come? What happened? I asked.

"Dunno. Its XP."
