Buttons do not show on taskbar; windows available by ALT-Tab only

The buttons for active programs no longer appear on my taskbar. I can get the
qucik launch and other tool bars to show, but not the active programs. I can
get to the windows using ALT-Tab, but would like to get the buttons back.

Any suggestions?
