Burning data CD/DVD - why the need for re-copying all the files?

Can someone PLEASE tell me why, when I go to make a simple backup of data,
that the built-in "BURN" function must make a complete copy of the data to a
temporary file, THEN create an image file. THEN finally burn the disc???

This process is so painfully slow, I miss the ability to use Nero so much.
With Nero, I could simply drag the files I wanted to burn to the "disc"
folder, then hit BURN. It would burn the disc right then and there, and be
done in minutes.

With Vista's built in tool, it has to go through all these steps. Please
tell me there is an easier, faster way to do this (without a 3rd party
software).

Yes, just use Nero.

The latest version is Vista compatible, I'm using it myself.

If you have a license for the latest numbered version (before the 'dot') you
can upgrade to the latest sub-version (after the 'dot'), no charge.

That's why there's third-party software...

I noticed the fact that the burning process is faster if you click on the
more options button and change the option to MASTERED because its a simple
write to disc. The default tries to make the disc work as a floppy disc or
USB key would so you can add and delete as you please. I tried the first
option and it was painfully slow, second option was much quicker, like
windows XP was.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I know I can upgrade to Nero - I just need to
spend another $63.99. I was hoping the built-in windows burning utility
would be a bit more, umm, user-friendly.

Yes, I also wrote the disc in "Mastered" mode, as I have no need for the
"direct-CD" writing capability. It still had to go through the process of
copying all the files I wanted to burn to a temp folder. Then, once I hit
BURN, it had to spend more time "creating a disk image" before burning. Why
the 3rd party tools can skip these steps and microsoft can't? Surely it's
not to prevent business from being taken away from companies like Ahead or
Roxio...

There has GOT to be a way to burn the files on the fly, instead of all these
in-between steps???

I am having the same problem. Burning a full data DVD on a 16x burner takes
1.5 hours. My Xp machine can do this much, much faster on a 8x burner . It
is just plain ridiculous.
Nero is great, but I just spent a bunch of money on Vista, and it is a drag
to use this basic feature.
