Windows Defender installed and running properly for many months on XP
machine. Recently a pop-up notice appears in the lower right of the screen
every time I start or restart my computer. It reads:

"An application Registration Change was made for a known application file:
c:\program files\windows defender\MpCmdRun.exe."

Why is this notice always appearing and how do I stop it? Thanks.

If you look at Bitman's response in the thread I started on 22 July titled
'Switching on RTP again', you'll find an answer to your question. I'm not
sure I understand it - it seems that Defender makes this registration change
as a security measure, and then reports itself for doing so - but I get that
little pop up myself at every start up, along with a couple of other spurious
regulars. To stop it, untick the box in 'options' about notifying you of
'changes made to your computer by software that is allowed to run'.

If you do that, check your system restore points during the next few days,
to see if Defender is having a party creating spurious checkpoints.

This message indicates that the user has checked the box to be notified of
changes made to the system by "programs that are allowed to run" or some
such wording--this is not checked by default.

In this case, the change that is creating this notification is Windows
Defender re-scheduling the scheduled task (presumably daily) that does
scheduled scanning.

So--the way to eliminate this notification is either to uncheck that
checkbox in tools, options, or to not have a scheduled scan.

I'll do that but there should be a better fix. I should be able to make
changes to scheduled scans and still be notified of changes to the system by
other programs allowed to run without this annoying bubble popping up. Your
system designers should address this problem. Thanks.

I'm not Microsoft. However, Microsoft does read these groups, and feedback
such as this is noted--so you've posted in the right place.
