BSOD during Windows Setup

I can boot to my Windows XP disk and Windows setup
begins. At first it starts loading all those drivers you
see at the bottom of the screen. It always gets passed
that part no problem. As soon as it finishes loading the
drivers it says something like "Starting Windows Setup".
That is as far as I get every time. Most of the time I
get a BSOD, sometimes It will just freeze and sometimes
my pc reboots. I don't understand what the problem is.
I booted to a Win98SE boot disk and fdisked my drive. I
created a single DOS partition, restarted, then formatted
my C: drive. So disk space isn't a problem. It's a 30GB
Maxtor drive. I thought maybe my hard drive was bad so I
tried another hard drive. Same problem. Then I thought
my Windows XP disk might be bad so I tried installing
Win98SE. Same problem. It will hang soon after setup
starts. I tried two different motherboards because I
thought maybe the IDE controllers were bad but that
wasn't the problem. I even took every piece of hardware
out of my system except the bare essentials. I tried
installing with my cd-rw drive and my dvd drive. I tried
setting both drives up on different IDE channels as
master. That didn't work either. I am stumped. Here is
a list of the hardware I am using:

Abit NF7-S motherboard
AMD 1800+ CPU
2x256 Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM
Gainward GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB 4xAGP GPU

The reason I have to do a clean install of Windows is
because my old motherboard (Soyo Dragon Plus KT266A) died
on me. I just bought the Abit board and now I can't get
Windows to install. Below is the exact BSOD error
message I keep getting. Please help me get Windows up
and running again. I will check this board often to
answer any questions any one has. Thank you very much.
Also, I am using default settings in my BIOS.

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the
first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart
your computer. If this screen appears again,
follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a
driver is identified in the stop message, disable the
driver or check with the manufacturer fordriver updates.
Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates.
Disable BIOS memory options, such as caching or
shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or
disable components, restart your computer. Press F8 to
select advanced startup options and then select safe
mode.

Mike, I had an AMD chip once that I had to get a patch for, from hte AMD
webdite in order to install win 2000 - this is kind of a long shot but try
contacting them and see if they have any ideas.
Did the installs go smoothly or did you have problems and did they run
slowly? Had to uninstall a modem on one computer to get it to run win 2000.
Can you boot into safe mode and look for hardware conflicts? IF you can
boot into safe mode - use logging - then look for the hardware or driver
failure in the log file.
I ran a google search with "0x0000007e error" and got a lot of hits
