Browsers unable to connect (hanging) but network connection work

Hi,

I have a strange problem on my laptop and I'm trying to get some help
in figuring out what I could do.

Problem: all the browsers (IE and Firefox) and some email applications
(Thunderbird) hang starting.
- IE shows the main windows and hangs waiting
- Firefox hangs before showing the main windows (the firefox.exe
process start to eat all the CPU indefinitely)
- Thunderbird shows the main window and hangs

Various info:
- network seems OK (ping works, tracert works). The rtt times from ping
seem reasonable.
- I disabled the integrated firewall (no change)
- I removed the anti virus programs (no change)
- other applications work (e.g., WinSCP, cygwin, ...). I therefore
suppose that the problem lies in a Windows component that these
applications do not use
- in safe mode with networking I have the same behaviour
- in safe mode w/o networking as expected I get the correct error page
in the browser

I tried to do some searches on the net but I was not able to find
keywords specific enough to find something relevant

I also tried to reinstall windows on the current installation
(reinstall and repair) with no improvements (before formatting and
reeinstalling everything I wanted to see if solving the problem is
possible :)

Any suggestion or hint?

Many thanks,

Matteo

If I look at the systems stats:
- no (or almost no packets) are sent
- incoming traffic seems normal (packets are received)

Thanks again (and sorry for the splitted post).

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

Many thanks for the hint,

I tried both (and WinsockXPFix) but still no change. All the apps hang
as soon as a connection is needed.

Hi there

i've the same problem, all things seems ok but I forgot to validate my dns
server's address whit my actual ISP (I changed to another site), and I
continued using the older one.

Changing to a new dns address, got a solution
