Suddenly unable to connect to internet with browser

K

Ken

WinXP, SP2

One of my computers rather abruptly is unable to connect to the internet
with either IE6 or Firefox. Other computers on network have no problem.

I can ping the router; I can ping www.yahoo.com.

However, when I try to access the internet with either of my browsers,
IE6 and Firefox 2, I receive a message that I am unable to connect.

Very curious. Any idea how I begin to track this down?

Thanks

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

Also, for abrupt changes you might try a System Restore to when things
were working.

This happened with my wife's laptop two weeks ago, turns out the firewall
(sygate, gee I wonder if Symantec has anything to do with this?) was the
culprit. It was blocking all traffic but not showing it, the allow all
funtion didn't work as well, I don't know if this is your problem but it's a
place to start even if you use a different firewall.

Here are three things to try:

- Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]

- NETSH

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

- You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix
