Browser(s) abort for some links

I have a peculiar problem that I am hoping someone has some knowledge of and
can offer some advice. There are occasionally some web sites that whenever I
try to go to them, the browser will shut down and I am returned abruptly to
my desktop. This will occur with both IE6 and Firefox 1.04 so does not seem
to be related to a specific browser - but may be related to some settings in
either that affects both. When other people go to the same sites, they have
no problem so it must be something with my computer and its settings, etc.
This shutdown will occur either if I click on a link for it or manually enter
the URL into the address bar. The fact that the shutdown will occur only with
some sites makes me wonder if my computer is preventing the loading of
certain code (???). I do have Counterspy, & Zone Alarm Basic. However, I
have tried deactivating them but found that the problem persists. I also
have Norton AV but am hesitant to disable that. Ideas?

First eliminate any spyware.

Hi Maakka :)

You do not tell us the version of Windows you are using, so I can only guess
at a suggestion. You might try the following and see if it helps:

Go to Test your Javascript here:
http://www.dancespots.net/browsertest.htm

also…

Go to Start>Run type in
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll (notice the space between 32 and urlmon)
Hit enter and ok out

and...

IOpen an ms-dos prompt window (Start>Run>) and type the following (one entry
at a time), and press enter after each line. A message will appear stating
that these have been registered successfully.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll (this command only for Win2000 and XP)
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Sorry about neglecting Windows version - it is XP Media Center Edition.
Tried all of your tips but to no avail. Also ran spyware removal tools and
checked articles you noted - again to no avail. The site that I am presently
having problems with is http://www.iowastatefair.com/home.html. Whenever I
try to access that site and by whatever means, my browser will abort with no
error messages whatever and I am back at the desktop. This abort does occur
with some other sites but it all happens so fast that I cannot determine the
full URL. Would sites ending with *.html have anything to do with it? Thanks
for your advice so far.

Hi Maakka :)

There appears to be a lot of popups on that page. As you have XP SP2, try
disabling the popup blocker. The popup blocker that is installed with SP2
is simple to turn on and off and is turned on by default. It shows down in
the status bar of IE, and a simple right click gives you the option to
enable/disable the blocker. One nice feature is that you can enable/disable
popups for certain sites rather than just arbitrarily enable or disable them
for all sites.

Disable any other popups blockers you may have, Google, Yahoo, etc. Turn
*off* the Advanced Options in Google toolbar.

Also check your firewall and AV for any popup blockers that are stripping
header\url info.

Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on a link
or
Temprarily allow Popups in XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_popupblocker.mspx

There is also javascript there, so you might want to update your javascript
engine,
You can update your scripting engine. The latest scripting engine for 200
and XP can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Troubleshooting Secure Sites (WinXP/IE6 SP1)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813444

Also,

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

Check the date and time on your computer ...if it's wrong, cookies will
not be accepted and you will not be able to log in to some sites.

Hope this helps.

Hi hampton :)
I am having the same problem. It is with various sites.

If you are having the same problem, did you try any of the suggestions that
I offered for the OP? If so, what were the results? And the version of
Windows you are using. You have not posted sufficient information to make
other suggestions at this point. :)
