broadband

My web site takes forever to publish a file. I want to upload a bunch of
pictures to a folder on my site but the time that it takes to upload seems
very long. Is there a control that can be set to allow upload speeds to go
faster. On the bottom of Frontpage I see uploading file and @ 256kbps. Can I
increase this to say 500k or higher?

The speed of the upload is controlled by the speed of your connection. You
can't change that. Check the size of your images. You may be able to make
them smaller which will speed up the publishing

In addition to what Dave says, something to keep in mind is the upload speed
of broadband of broadband is way, way slower than the download speed.
Getting 256 kbps is actually pretty darned good. That equates to about
30KB/second which from what I've seen, is far higher than a lot of broadband
connections.

Hi Mark. I've also found that when it comes to images (or large files) it's
faster to FTP them to the site then to have FrontPage do the publish. Of
course you have to be careful when using FTP (so you don't corrupt the
FrontPage Extensions) but as long as you only FTP up the images and not the
_vti folders it works just fine.

To see what Mark's saying you can use a site like DSL Reports
www.dslreports.com which has a speed tester that can tell you what your real
upload speed is.

Hey I was trying to upload a huge video file and was screeming about the slow
up. I maybe nuts to expect faster than 256 up speed'
I guess I could reduce the file size and loose some of the excellent
corvette racing clarity.
Anyone got a good way to take .wmv to a smaller size. It is a 7.55 minute
video at 640X 320 resolution. (268meg) I tried conversion to Quicktime
320X160 and it wa s actually larger in size (326Meg).
Help me out here on posting huge vid files to my site
please visit my site and give me a few pointers as to what could make it
better

Hey this answers my Question sort of!
So now I gotta ask, another question...
I am trying to upload a huge video file in (.wmv) 256 megs
i tried changing it to quicktime (.mov) and it actually was larger..328 megs
This is a very cool Corvette at Road Atlanta file so I really would like to
post it on my web site
http://www.theroadpoet.com
If you could go there and loook at the site and give me a few pointers about
what you all see i would be forever thankful.
Also what can I do to reduce the size/upload time.
Is there some codec that will allow every one in my Corvette club to see the
video and shrink it to a size that is not too big to upload?
Boy thisa is fun!!!!

You might want to look into Windows Media Encoder which will compress the
file and allow you to post it as a streaming media file. This means that
the user doesn't have to wait for that huge file to download before it
starts playing. It will buffer it and start playing sooner. See the
article at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/broadcast.aspx for
more on how this works.

You can get Media Encoder at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx

You could also ask your web host if they offer a streaming media server.

If you prefer to stay with the QuickTime format you can take a look at the
encoding and streaming tools they have at
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/broadcaster/
