hi all

Just been informed that I have been upgraded to 8 meg broadband, however, I cannot see any difference to the 2 meg that I was previously on.

I've done a speed test with 'Thinkbroadband.com' and that came back as:

Down Speed: 2893.29 Kbps ( 2.8 Mbps )
Up Speed: 352.66 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )

Is this normal, or are they having me on?

Is there a setting I have to adjust on the Laptop?

Is there a better test site that i should be using?

Please advise

Cheers

Lee

It takes around 10 days to let your speed settle to the final level, so if it has only just been done it may not be quite Representative. On the other hand, 8MB is the max possible and is often much lower for many people if you are far from the phone exchange. My 8MB broadband is only around 4.5MB, but I know many people who can't even get above 2MB on an 8MB connection.

Also check with BT or your provider what your line/exchange is capable of receiving

Just because it says 8MB you maybe only viable to receive 6 or less

The adverts do say upto 8MB

Oops sorry Ian ;)

Some usful links for you below,

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

...and another speed test site to check out....

http://www.speedtest.net/

BT Speedtester....

Please follow these steps:

1. Disconnect from your ADSL connection
2. Login with the user name speedtest@speedtest_domain instead of your usual ADSL login in your modem / router. This will accept any password.
Also please ensure that the DNS settings in your router are set to 'Server Assigned'.
3. Once connected go to http://speedtester.bt.com
4. Enter your telephone number in the relevant field
5. Once test is complete, save the results to your hard disk, then disconnect and log in with your own username and password.

I wondered if using a UK speed site would affect download speed compared to one closer to home:

Thinkbroadband.com (UK)
Download: 2414.44 Kbps

PcPitstop.com (US-Texas)
Download: 2506 Kbps

I'm suprised they are so similar.
My phone company DSL speed is rated at 1.5 Mbps minimum, up to 3 Mbps.
Looks like they are honest about speed.

Thats quite a good download speed :thumb: Some ISPs only have limited bandwidth capacity at their end and that can sometime limit speeds from overseas, however most US and European ISPs have plenty of bandwidth from lots of networks now :)

Ping times will be quite a bit different though, I get ~20-40ms in the UK and ~120-150ms from the US. Not bad got a packet of information there and back in well under a second all the way across the globe :D
