Broadband connection terminates after around 5-10 minutes

Hello,

This is my first post to this group. This is regarding a problem I am
facing when I am using Broadband connection.

I have Windows XP Professional OS on my machine. I have just bought an
ethernet card (10/100) for getting the broadband connection which is
LAN based. What is happening is that after 5-10 minutes of usage the
web stops responding. I have to logoff from the ISP provided dialler
screen and reboot the machine. Now, if I reboot the machine, I am able
to connect to the internet. Again after 5-10 minutes it conks off. I
have even called my ISP support guy, but he has yet to provide a
solution.

I have tried installing the Windows XP again, but I am facing the same
problem.

If any one can suggest as to what could be the problem and how it can
be rectified, i would be thakful. Pardon me if this is not the proper
group, if anyone can suggest a group which handles this kind of query,
it would be helpful.
Should I replace my ethernet card with another new one?

Thanks,
PNR

hi.
Why do you have to reboot the machine after logging off from the ISP
provided dialler screen, can't u reconnect from the dial-up connection for
broadband If it's that u can't do it ,check for the device manager and find
whether the network adapter or lan card is properly installed if possible
uninstall the driver ,restart the machine and then again reinstall the driver
then see what happens . Try to get Sp1 or Sp2 that helps lot of the time

I'm confused about the "dialer screen" with broadband. Usually you don't
dial anything with DSL or cable. Can you describe this better? What ISP
do you use?

In the meantime, open the System applet in Control Panel. Click on the
Hardware tab and then Device Manager. In Device Manager expand the
Network Adapters category and find the entry for your ethernet card
(NIC). Double-click that to get the NIC's Properties. Click on the
Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says "allow Windows to
turn off this device when not in use".

I assume you have an ADSL modem rather than an ADSL
modem/router. I dealt with a similar case recently and resolved
it by tossing out the modem and installing a modem/router instead.
Much nicer: No more "dialling"/validation plus a natural hardware
firewall plus routing capabilities for remote access.

Thanks Badprad_m. I will try to install SP2 in case no other option
works.

Thanks Malke.

I have been provided a Web dialer software where I have to enter the
user-id and password and then I am connected to the net. Yes, it is not
a dial-up dialer. This works without phone line. I am using VSNL ISP.
In the meantime, open the System applet in Control Panel. Click on the

I am not able to find the Power Management tab in ethernet card
properties.
It has only 4 tabs: General, Advanced, Driver, Resources.
Can you please let me know where else it may be present?
Anyways, thanks for the information.

Thanks Pegasus. I am not that much of an expert in hardware related
matters
but it is true that I have built in modem. I am connecting through LAN
cable, so I modem does not come in picture. (I may be wrong in
understanding your answer) Are you saying that I remove the modem from
my machine and replace it with modem/router hardware?

PNR.

Hi Malke
In the meantime, open the System applet in Control Panel. Click on the
Hardware tab and then Device Manager. In Device Manager expand the
Network Adapters category and find the entry for your ethernet card
(NIC). Double-click that to get the NIC's Properties. Click on the
Power Management tab and uncheck the box that says "allow Windows to
turn off this device when not in use".

I was able to find the Power management option under 'Modem' category,
but there were two options shown there (checkbox selection)
Allow this computer to turn off this device to save power

Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby

The first option was greyed out, so I could not do anything on that. I
have clicked the second option. I will let you know if that has worked.

PNR

Yes. I use cable so I'm not exactly sure what your modem setup is, but I
strongly recommend using a router for any high speed internet connection.
A router is easier to set up, more secure, and shareable (you can access the
internet with multiple computers on a switch/router while paying your ISP
for one IP address).
