Bringing in doc changes template

I have another question... I brought in a document, changed the template to
mine but there are a ton of other styles that Word created from the document
I'm using. Shouldn't all syles be changed to my template? I've used Word for
so many years and I swear older versions didn't do this. Thanks for any help.

Whenever you paste or insert text into an existing document, it brings its
styles with it. Attaching a template doesn't change that. If the styles
overlap, you can check the "Automatically update document styles" box when
you attach the template to update the relevant styles.
