Apologies for any no-brainers in this messge, I'm a
newbie to these newsgroups. Thanks in advance for your
help.
I'm running XP Home SP1 on an HP Pavillion ze5185
notebook (thanks for condolences).
Yesterday I defragged and D/L'd a new MDAC that BigFix
said was available. I shut down and restarted this
morning. Now XP will go through the bootup process up to
the blue screen (with XP logo just right of center) just
before the login, but will not display the login icons.
I've done several reboots, restore to last known good,
safe mode, safe mode with command prompt. All go to this
pre-login screen and no further (which seems weird when
asking for command prompt). MS-Support says I'm screwed -
do a full restore, but that just doesn't seem to be
right because of a boottime error. Any suggestions to
fix? Thank you.
