Name and location of login program

I was installing Windows Updates on a Win XP SP2 machine. I locked the
screen and went away till it completed. A user could not get by the lock so
she simply turned off the machine.

Now, a login screen does not appear - just the blue background. I cannot
get into safe mode or safe mode with networking. Even safe mode, command
prompt only does not give a command prompt. Just shows the black background.

What is the name of the login program, how do I restore it. Or do I have to
reimage the machine?

Thanks.

I should point out that the PC in question is part of a Windows Server 2003
domain - one server in domain only.

Safe mode ?
Repair install ?
sfc /scannow ?

If all those fail - it may be quicker to "re-image" - as it sounds like you
have such a thing in place.
