Bootable CD

Hello,

WIN XP Home SP2

I am trying to flash up-grade, my DVD ROM and followed some simple
instructions to create a floppy, the instructions were as follows,

To create a "Real DOS" minimal boot floppy -- Some versions of Windows have
the ability to do this but others don't. The easiest way is to download the
self-extracting file "winme_plain_boot_ disk.exe" from here:

Insert a blank formatted floppy in your drive, run the self-extracting file
and it will create the boot disk. Use a good quality branded disk. Copy
DWL2.EXE and the firmware file to this disk.

But there lies my problem, I don't have a floppy, I have downloaded the
above file, it is now in a folder on my HD, if I click on this file it asks
me to insert a floppy.

Remember it is a self- extracting file, is there any way I can burn this
file on to a CD within XP, I don't have Nero or any such programe like that.

No. Even if you could, the file most likely would not work.

I'm not sure if this will even work, but...

You could try installing the Recovery Console on your hard drive. Then
try running the flash program from there. NOTE: I am not claiming this
will work. I have never tried this myself. Do it at your own risk. Etcetera.

To install the Recovery Console as a startup option
With Windows running, insert the Setup CD into your CD-ROM drive.
CLick Start and select Run.
Type the following where D: is the CD-ROM drive letter:
D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

Follow the instructions on the screen.

Notes

To run the Recovery Console, restart your computer and select the
Recovery Console option from the list of available operating systems.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your
computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also
prevent you from completing this procedure.

To see the commands available on the Recovery Console, type help at the
at the console prompt.

If your computer will not start, you can run the Recovery Console from
the Setup CD.
