I understand that many, many questions that are posed in these newsgroups
can be answered by the poster's doing a lot of research and digging via the
'Net.
Still, I think that's ONE of the legitimate reasons that many people DO use
these newsgroups: They don't want to spend endless hours -- nor should they
have to -- looking up information that someone already knows and can easily
supply here.
I'm well aware of the aphorism: "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for
today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime."
Still, there are times when people don't want a lifetime diet of fish; they
only need to eat some fish today because their stomachs are growling too
much to do any useful research. :>

The wider issue is: In a great many cases the answer to
simple questions can be found on the WWW. Once people
realise this, it makes things a lot simpler for them: Ask
Google a question, get an instant answer. It does not have
to be about computers - it could be just about anything.

I agree with you completely, and go even further. There is almost no
information or solution to someone's problem that anyone can supply
here that isn't already available somewhere on the internet. The
answer to *any* question could be "do a Google search." Follow that to
its logical conclusion and there would be no need for newsgroups like
this at all.
It's not just a matter of spending "endless hours" searching. Not
everyone knows about all the online resources available or has the
skills to search them effectively. If one of us who already knows the
answer to a question can supply it, then we do a service to the person
asking.

1) Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
2) Type in the following:
control userpasswords2
now click OK
3) In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the
primary logon.
Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
4) Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected
users password.
Click OK when you are done...

Hopefully that gets you where you are wanting to be.
It is a *good* thing in the user arena to:
1) Have strong passwords.
2) Have more than one administrator level account (with strong passwords).

And then there's people like me, who *did* Google before I posed my
question (see "Installshield Error"). I didn't find a solution, but at
least I found out wasn't alone.
So am I to assume if I don't find the answer in Google that I won't find
it here either?
Looks like I'd be more likely to bump into someone here that may have had
that problem before. Isn't that what these newsgroups are all about?

Part of the teaching (and learning) should be how to obtain some answers in
life on your own - especially when it is not complicated to do. Offering up
how to find the answers is just as valid as giving the answers away...
Perhaps more so...
I say the latter because it may be that the person that has the question
actually has many around the same subject - if you teach them how to find
the answer - perhaps even showing them that your method of finding the
answer works by pointing them to specific examples that should answer their
question that they actually asked - then they may be able to find the answer
to the other 1/2 dozen questions on their own.
Then - who knows - they may feel so confident in their own ability to locate
answers they might return the favor and answer someone elses question with
all of their newfound knowledge.
Just like in a classroom - it doesn't hurt to ask - but it's also wise to
attempt to learn as much as possible on your own and pass that own as well.
