boot up, win xp

Peter

Hi when i boot up win xp on my computer it takes a couple of minutes to get
to the point where everything is loaded. The desktop comes up right away but
I have to wait for a min or so to start using windows. My tray icons for my
antivirus and nvidia card dont load to tray anymore. I have a DSL modem with
a random ip from verizon , is that what slowing the boot up?

A couple of months ago I changed my mobo from nv3 to nv4 pci-e but used the
same harddrive with old winxp. I just reinstalled the chipset and graphic
drivers. I had the slow boot with the other mobo too.

Is there a way I can speed up my boot time because I frequently cant resume
from suspend to ram standby due to monitor not powerout of standby. Thanks

Peter

nvidia is no loss.

Notification area icons are missing at startup.

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.

Hi, I disabled ssdp and rebooted it was the same 2 min or so then I disabled
plug and play as well and it seemed to be a minute faster? There is still
a distinct pause though where start/ connect to/ isp is not accesable.

What about the resume from s3 not working 50% of the time Is that due to the
mobo upgrade it was fine on the old board?

Thanks for the input. Peter

I hope that you meant the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service and
NOT the Plug and Play service.

My post was to try to get your notification icons back, not speed up your
boot process. To do that disable some of the things that probably start
when you boot.

Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | Click OK |
[+] Software Environment | Startup Programs

I have no idea what s3 is.

hi, S3 =suspend to ram standby, problem sometimes cant wake from standby
requires reboot. 2+ min before I can connect DSL ISP. Is this normal?

So if I didnt get the icons back and the startup may not be faster should i
put back the 2 services to auto?

In the past when I had problems with the icons in the tray its because I
installed and removed something the I reinstalled the driver and it was back
but I dont think its worth it because the programs still work. thanks

Beats me. See this...

Not if you do not need them for anything. Like if you're not on a network.
