XP stopped working after dual boot attempt

Hello

I tried to set up a dual boot using Linux/ubuntu 8.04 LTS. ubuntu works
fine. XP will not boot.

XP starts to load and comes up with the Windows loading screen, then flashes
a BSOD at me and restarts.

The XP software was working perfectly, and is legit....i have the sticker
with serial number on the back of the m/c...but unfortunately no CD (it wasnt
shipped with the PC and now the supplier has gone into admin and cant help).
It was supplied to me in 2004 as SP1...since then i have upgraded to SP3,
until it broke towards the end of last year.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

my system is:
Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz (socket 478)
512Mb RAM (PC133)
MSI mobo with Via chipset
80Gb IDE HDD
nVidia FX5200
Creative Audigy 2

thanks

Do your very best to capture what *exactly* is displayed on your BSOD
and then reproduce it here.

Best wishes,

Try booting to the Last Known Good Configuration or to Safe-Mode. If
you can't boot to these modes you can remotely edit the Windows registry
with various Linux registry editor tools or you can remotely edit it
with another Windows installation. To have Windows halt on the Bugcheck
error message you need to edit the AutoReboot registry value at the
appropriate numbered Control Set, the information on the Control Sets
can be obtained at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select key. If you are
unsure as to which set to edit you can edit all of them (ControlSet001,
ControlSet002...) The AutoReboot value to edit is typically at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\CrashControl

Set the AutoReboot value to 0

To remotely edit the value from another Windows machine see easy to
follow instructions here: http://www.rwin.ch/xp-live/regedit.htm

unfortunately, you
screwed up.

at this time you will
need to acquire a
windows cd and
perform a repair
installation.

otherwise, it seems
that your option would
be to utilize the recovery
program that came
with the machine.

that recovery program
will wipe everything off
the disk and restore it
back to its original state
it was at the time of
purchase.

the instructions for the
above are available from
the machines home site.

------------------

perhaps, you might try
a knoppix cd and hope
to get your personal data
off the disk before
recovery.

or maybe you can slave
the drive on a different
computer and work on
the drive from there.

--------------

next time you can install
virtual pc in winxp,

then install your other
o.s.'s in virtual pc if
you want to play around.
