I deleted a linux partition then attempted to boot into
DOS to run fdisk /mbr but the system wouldn't restart. It
just gave and error and asked for a system disk.

I placed the windows cd into the drive and started the
recovery console. It now seems that no windows
installations can be detected. I think it's a problem
with the service_boot_start reg entry but I'm not sure.

chkdsk can't find a disk to check and none of the boot
config commands will work either.

Any suggestions on how to get windows up and running
again.

Thanks

From the recovery console prompt give
diskpart
list partition
[note the number n for the one where the XP is installed]
select partition=n
active
exit
[this will have ensured that the boot will go looking to the right
partition as the active one]. Next

BootCfg /Rebuild
fixboot
fixmbr

and
exit
to reboot
