Boot problem, Atapi cd-rom no emulation

I lost the right click on my PC and couldn't bring up the
context menu so I decided to do a system restore because
I'd done quite a lot of updating etc. When it restarted I
got a message saying Windows couldn't restart because
there was a corrupt or missing file <windows
root>\system32\hal.dll and to reinstall it. I've found
the file on my laptop and put it on a floppy disk, but I
can't boot it up to install it. Then I decided to try
the recovery disk that came with the computer and I got
the message Boot from Atapi cd-rom no emulation and a
flashing cursor. I downloaded XP Home edition 'boot from
floppy disk' files from Microsoft, and they were working
until it asked for the XP Home Edition cd-rom to finish
set up. The only disk I have is the recovery disk which
came with my Sony Vaio PCV RS123. Can anyone please help.
HERE'S HOPING!!!!
