have XP prof on one disk
Vista on another
boot manager installed
want to reinstall XP from scratch without losing dual boot!
have org. image for XP but want to pick-up Vista for dual boot later!!!
What to do?

Was Vista installed after WinXP in the original Dual Boot? If so, I
think the Bootloader would be on the drive with Vista. So, disconnect the
Vista drive and do a clean install of
WinXP then reconnect the Vista drive. Theoritically it should work.
Though you may have to do a repair of the Vista Bootloader. Again I am not
sure of this since I have never done
it.

Just go ahead and do the reinstall of XP. Then when you're finished get
your Vista install disk and boot from it. Once it's loaded choose the
repair option. Then I forget exactly what comes up (just going from
memory here) but there is an option to repair boot problems which is
what you'll want to use. It will then scan your drives looking for
installed OS's and repair the boot menu.

This KB Article (not for the faint of heart or technically-challenged)
explains how to repair the Vista boot process after installing WinXP:

Windows Vista no longer starts after you install an earlier version of
the Windows operating system in a dual-boot configuration
