Boot Image

I download the evaluation version of Windows XP Embedded from the MS site. My
problem now is that I don't have XPe boot image that I can use.

I want to use VPC, but how can I install XPe if I don't have a XPe bootable
image to use?

Sam,

Why do you need "XPe boot image"?

Do you mean just a *WinPE* disk? If so, you can use XP Pro or Vista instillation disk. They are WinPE bootable disk. Just hit
Shift+F10 during the install to be able to interrupt the installation procedure and go to the WinPE CMD prompt. From there you can
prepare the virtual disk , format it and copy the XPe image from the network.

Hello Sean,

Can you please go into a little more detail on how you do this?

Thanks for your help :)

1. I first installed Windows XP Pro in a VPC.
2. Ran TAP to capture a PMQ file
3. Imported a PMQ file to create a macro component.

Microsoft now has a VPC2004 macro component already in the database so the
steps above are not needed, but you should have a XP Pro VPC to use to
download XPe to another VPC. My second XPe book covers this in detail.

You can use the VPC2004 macro component with the Full XP Pro like solution
found here: http://www.seanliming.com/Components.html to create a full XP
Pro like OS to run in VPC.

I hope that helps.

You can also use VHDMount, a utility that allows you to mount VHDs as
virtual drives. VHDMount is a very powerful tool that even supports Undo
disks. You can get VHDMount with Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 Service
Pack 1 (free download). You don't need to install the whole virtual server
product to get VHDMount. Just select the custom installation mode when
running setup and deselect everything else.

Once you have your VHD mounted as a virtual drive, you can simply prep the
virtual drive for boot and then "xcopy" your runtime image, commit the
changes to the VHD, unmount the VHD and finally, fire-up your virtual
machine in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (or Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2
SP1).
