boot from cd

Tried booting from cd to repair..first screen I come to asks (1)restore
windows XP or (2) boot from cd...I choose 2 and it asks for a command???

Are you just sticking the CD in the drive and rebooting or did you set the
CD drive to be the first boot option in your system BIOS? This is what is
required to boot from the Windows XP CD.

The recovery console when you boot to it gives just a C:> prompt asking
for a command (search on "Recovery Console Commands" including quotes
in Help and Support).

But this sounds to me like a maker's Restore disk, not a retail Standard
one, and I cannot be sure what this second choice is
