Bill Hunteman

I will try this post for the second time. The first time
my question was answered with a question.

I have 4-XP OS's on my computer. I see the boot files are in C:\ drive.
If I do a clean install on C:\ drive, will I loose my boot files for the
other OS's? If I will, can I copy the old boot file into the "boot.ini
notepad file to restore boot for the other 3 OS's ?

The purpose of the "Boot.ini" file - which is generated when you install
two, or more, operating systems - is to present an option as to which OS you
want to boot. If you do no make a selection then, as you know, the default
OS, usually the first listed, boots after an adjustable time delay. "Clean
install" means exactly that - however reinstalling XP on the C drive will
"regenerate" the boot.ini file.

Please--could I get an answer to this question.
"If I do a clean install on C:\ drive, will I loose my boot files for the

Hi Bill,

You can do a clean install on your C drive. The installation will see the
other XP's installed and will create the new boot.ini with all the other
XP's. You will then be able to select which XP you want to boot into.

The new installation will be the default but you can change that later if
you want.

At last I got a direct answer to my question.

You're welcome Bill.

I believe AJR answered it as well when he said "reinstalling XP on the C
drive will
"regenerate" the boot.ini file.

Sorry, no, I'm with Bill on this one. "Regenerate" does not tell me
whether or not the existing entries will be retained.
