Blue screen of death

!) Doesn't this get logged to a file on the computer somewhere?
Where?

The cause of the screen is my 6800 GT video card. I can put and old
TNT 2 card in and Windows boots fine.

I left home with clear skies. We had a short thunderstorm. When I
returned the skies were clear again. I have my computer set to not
power up after power out. The computer was on but the mouse light,
keyboard light, and monitor was off. This suggests if the house did
take a hit it was only a flash. After several reboots nothing
happened. I turned off the power supply and left it alone overnight.
I removed everything and put in an old TNT 2 card that I know was
working a few months ago when I removed it from a machine.

It posted fine with the old card. I put everything back together. I
got the blue screen of death. I changed the video card back to the old

TNT2 and it boots fine.

The card I am trying to get back in is a 6800GT. It displays the whole

booting process but I am sure it is causing the BSD. I do have the
power supply on the card plugged in.

I have a pretty new 600W powersupply. Aren't today's PS supposed to
take the bullet?

The file that the error is logged to by default is C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

Boot with new 6800 card in and boot to safe mode by tapping f8 at startup.
In safe mode go into control panel > add remove programs and remove any and
all NVidia software that you installed with the card. Now go into Device
Manager via Control panel > Performance and Maintanence(skip if on classic
view) > System > Hardware Tab > device manager button. Click display
adapters and remove any referrences to the 6800GT card. Last Step in system
properties (Control panel > Performance and Maintanence(skip if on classic
view) > System) click advanced tab click settings under startup and recovery,
then uncheckmark automatically restart under system failure and click ok and
click ok. Restart into normal mode. If it does it again it will show you
the exact error and repost that back here. If it boots up then you will just
have to reinstall the correct drivers. Good Luck

Your web site shows you either have done some hard work in making
booting easier or at least some hard work collecting tools to make it
easier.

I got my fill of Tandy with my first IBM compatible machine, but they
did one thing with my 1000 HX that was right. The OS was on a chip.
Granted it was 2.1 when they were up to 3.3, but power up was never
easier or faster.

Would an EEPROM cost that much more to hold XP? I am pretty sure there
would be many willing to pay.

Yes. $950 for a 6GB drive.

I am pretty sure there

You are not suggesting it takes 6G to boot XP are you? Mine came on a
single CD.

MS claims it installs on 1.5 GB. BUT, once you calculate swap space,
room to grow for updates, and room for a few basic apps, and some room
for personal files.

$350 for 2GB
$670 for 4GB (Possible to install XP)

You can buy a relatively high end 500GB hard drive for $310. Less than
2GB of flash.

$5.85 /MB flash
VS
$1.61/GB (0.16 Cents/MB) Rotating Platter

Some people might pay 2 or even 4 X as much for the speed But not 3500X
as much.

That's in compressed form - the CD is not "XP" but an installer that
"Creates XP" as it installs.

The reason for not putting modern systems in ROM you have already explained
yourself, it is impossible to update, so if it comes with defects you are
stuck with those defects. It is not impossible to work around this problem
but then you lose anything you gained from the fact that ROM is not
volatile.
