Blue Screen of Death: Shutdown Problem

I

info

Hello everyone (and apologies for cross-posting),

I am having problems with my PC. Every time I run a virus scan it gives
me the blue screen of death and an error message:

(0X00000000, 0X00000000, 0X00000000, OX00000000)

When I start the PC up again I get another message saying a fatal error
has occurred; followed by an error code:

BCCode:7f BCP1:00000000 BCP2: 00000000 BCP3:00000000 BCP4:00000000
OSVer:5_1_2600 SP:1_0 Product256_1

Also, the following files are included in the error report:

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini:100806-02.dmp
C:\\DOCUME~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER4.temp.dir00\sydata.xml

Initially this problem would only happen when running a virus scan,
although the problem has now occurred when using the PC generally.
From the information I've been able to find, I thought that the problem
was connected to my graphics card. I have reinstalled and updated my
drivers, but the problem still occurs. Could the problem be related to
my memory allocation...possible a memory mismatch?

I'm at a loss as what to do at the moment. Can someone please help me?
Thanks in advance for your time, and help.

Best wishes,

Owen

Try to run the a/v in Safe Mode. Avast! allows you to schedule a boot
scan, which should do a scan before the software can take control.
Perhaps your a/v software can do that too.

Hello everyone (and apologies for cross-posting),

Cross-posting is fine. No apology necessary.

I am having problems with my PC. Every time I run a virus scan it
gives me the blue screen of death and an error message:

But telling us what virus scanner you're using would certainly be helpful.

I use AVG Free, Spybot, and Adaware.

The problem arises when I run a full system scan on either Ad-Aware or
AVG Free.

I hope that helps.

I use AVG Free, Spybot, and Adaware. All, when used with XP, do not
allow a boot scan, or for one to schedule a scan.

Having said this, although the problem arises when I run a full system
scan on either Ad-Aware or AVG Free, I do not think the problem is
caused by a virus.

Have you tried scanning the system in safe mode? There might be
something in your system that stops you from scanning.

I suggest go into safe mode and scan from there or if AVG allows you to
create a bootable floppy/CD to scan the system then do it that way.
Symantec allows you but I am not sure about AVG. The idea is to scan
the system before any resources (and viruses/spyware) are loaded.

Yes, I've done that. It may be worth pointing out that my virus
software will allow me to scan the whole system in safe mode, but not
in normal mode. Yet despite the fact I can run the whole check in safe
mode, my anti virus software does not detect a virus.

I think the fact that the problem occurs when running a virus check is
a red herring.

Sometimes when I see crashes like that it's because of failing memory. You
might want to run a memory tester utility.

Is a divide by zero error. It's caused when a DIV instruction is executed
and the divisor is 0.
Causes could me Memory(heap corruption) or software has become corrupted.
If you could post the dump file it may give a clue.
Aside from that you could try uninstalling the problem software and try
rebooting and using your
computer to see if it stabilizes. And then reinstall the programs one at a
time and run your computer
in between to see how it responds.

You could be right.. Maybe if you run Scandisk and repair damaged
clusters, that will prevent the crashes during scans..

I ran a complete memory test: memtest86. There was no problem with my
memory.

I tried this: initially I reinstalled Ad-Aware and there were no

Interestingly when I reinstalled AVG, the problem affected Ad-Aware;
which previously had been working fine (after reinstallation).

I have also attempted to do this the other way round: installing AVG
first, and then Ad-Aware after. It seams that the pieces of software
work fine when running separately; they just do not work when installed
at the same time.

Very strange! I've tried downloading updated versions of both, and
the problems still exists. Does anyone have a clue as to what is wrong?

It's not starnge at all. Running two anti-virus programs at once is very
like to cause problems. You can have them both installed, but only one of
them should be running at a time.

I was not running them simulations; although they were both installed.
Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

Anyway, things seem to have been fixed (touch wood). It looks like it
was a virus after all.

After uninstalling AVG and Ad-Aware I decided to install Avast. It
found numerous viruses that the others did not pick up. Consequently I
have decided to keep Avast installed instead of AVG -- also I like the
feature of being able to run a boot scan.

I have since reinstalled Ad-Aware and everything is running smoothly --
no problems so far.

Thank you all very much for your help,

Best wishes,

Owen

Glad to hear it's fixed.

I like Avast too. One nice feature of Avast that not everyone sees is that
it can be set to run automatically whenever your screen saver kicks in.

I didn't make that statement clear either: it should obviously be
simultaneously -- not "simulations".

Notwithstanding the typo, it was perfectly clear.

Hi!
I used to get these messages too due to a malfunctioning RAM.
First try removing the RAM and pushing it back properly into the slot.
If you have 2 RAMs, you can remove one and check, then check the other
one. Otherwise, just borrow a RAM from another PC and check.
Hope this helps ;-)
