For the last week or so, when i boot my vaio and login to windows, the laptop
usually crashes and I get a blue screen error, and the laptop tries to
reboot. The blue screen error says the following:

****************************
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time youve seen this Stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in
the stop message disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver
updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove
or siable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced
startup options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, -x8056E40B, 0xED84F5F8, 0x00000000)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Pysical dump complete
************************************

When I try to turn the laptop on again, I can hear the sound of everything
on however it does not seem to boot and the VAIO logo does not display.

I usually have to wait about 20 mins and then boot it.

Please help
Thanks

Whatever it may LOOK like, it isn't booting.

You need to pop your Windows XP install disk into the CD drive. Follow
the prompts for a "Windows Repair."

When you get the screen that asks you to select your Windows
directory, type the correct #, which on my machine is usually a

1

you will then get a dos prompt. Type Help, hit Return,

and you will get the list of commands.

One towards the bottom SHOULD say, "Fixboot" or Bootfix"

Hit ESC

when the screen clears and you have the DOS prompt,

type fixboot/bootfix (whichever it is)

Hit Return

When the computer is done,

hit reset to reboot.

This SHOULD get you to your desktop.

If it doesn't, you will need to do an install.

Put the CD in your CD Drive, and install.

Do NOT choose the format/fdisk option UNLESS you are sure everything
is backed up.

Windows will NORMALLY (unless you have MAJOR issues)

simply install a fresh install of Windows over the old one, fixing
your problems as it goes.

If this fails, you will likely have to re-install over a fdisked,
formattted drive.

This is PRECISELY the reason we need to be faithful to back up DaILY.

Every time I finish ANYTHING, I drag a copy to my backup drive. I
worrry about "sorting and filing" later.

I also typically keep a 250 Zip disk in my Zip drive (usb) and
therefore, I have 2 backups going all the time.

Hope that helps.
