Blue Screen c0000135

Glenn

I have a XP home edition. We just downloaded SP2 and when
we start the PC we get the following "STOP: c0000135
{unable to locate component} This application has failed
to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the
application may fix the problem. My questions are (1)
what application? (2) how do I fix ??? when the PC never
makes it to windows? (3) Help.

This winsrv problem's been around for many years

There's a new option in Advanced Options Menu <F8>
- Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure -
to avoid continuous reboot cycle

Then you can read the blue-screen & research STOP error

Also see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=878474

Try

1. Within recovery console (first R on XP CD boot) run C:\chkdsk /r -- then
reboot

2. copying winsrv.dll (expand from CD - look it up) from within recovery
console - if it's just a corrupt file

3. repair install (2nd R on XP CD boot) - if, more than likely, it's a
corrupt registry.
Repair Install (look it up) keeps all your settings & programs, but you will
need to rerun all updates - and SP2 is the fastest way to do all that

That error means the 'winsrv.dat' or 'winsrv.dll' file is missing or
corrupt in the Windows\System32 folder, or more likely that
your registry was corrupt to begin with.

After performing a "Repair Install", reinstall SP2.

Can you send me the svcpack.log file from the failed install?
Remove the online from the email.

I am having a very similar problem, except my missing file is baseitfau32 (which I can't seem to find anywhere online), and when I try to get into any menus, nothing happens. I can see them, but typing or clicking does nothing. What can I do?

Service Pack 3 Problem

The same thing happened to me with Service Pack 3. Here's a simple fix to return to the previous update:

Go to the Control Panel, select ADD OR REMOVE, and delete Microsoft Service Pack 3. Your computer will then return to the previous workable Service Pack update. Make sure you select Display Updates at the top of the ADD or REMOVE window so Service Pack 3 will display (in alphabetical order) in the populated field.
