Blank screen

I have a computer with WindowsXP SP2 on it and the splash screen will come up
but then after that it goes to a blank screen. The only thing that will show
up is the mouse cursor. I've tried safe mode, safe mode with command prompt
and also VGA mode, and they all produce the same reslult, a blank screen.
Like I said the Windows XP splash screen works fine so I don't believe it is
a video card or monitor problem. I went to Microsofts web site and found
this hotfix for the problem "WindowsXP-KB948277-X86-ENU.EXE". So I
downloaded it with another PC since I can't see anything on the screen with
the bad PC. They give you no instructions on Microsofts web site on how to
apply the fix. So my question is how do I execute the EXE. since all I have
is a blank screen?

Try another Moniotr or Select from the Boot M<enu options Last Good known
Configuration that worked.
It could be the Video card going bad!

I tried the Last Known Good Configuration along with a different monitor and
I still have the blank screen.

then I will run the Chkdsk /r command from a recovery console.
To do this you need to have a recovery Disk which i believ you have.
How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Try to check the healtho f your Hard Drive it may going flaky, by
downloading the diagnostic tool from the HDD manufacturer website and run the
test on start up from a CD.
