Blank screen when booting with 9800SE

I installed an ATI 9800SE All INWonder last week since when the computer is
re-booted no data appears on the screen until I am asked if I want Windows
XP or Recovery Console.
I have a GIgabyte GA-7VRXP MB with a Via Chipset. I have downloaded the
latest MB drivers including the AGP one. Is it the 9800SE that is causing
the problem? After initially not getting UK TV I downloaded the modified
version of DirectX from the MS website.

Sounds like it could be the power supply. Do you have the latest BIOS for
your motherboard?

Hi Derek. I'd try flashing the BIOS first as another suggested, unless
you're squeamish about trying it. It's usually not too tough, just
follow Gigabyte's instructions carefully. I had a 9700 Pro when they
first came out that just quit after a week or so, but in my case, the
system simply refused to power on at all when the card was installed.
It happened after I added an extra light, which seemed a little suspect,
but after disconnecting the light it still wouldn't work, even with
another 9700 card in place. Because of this, I also suspected the PS on
mine, and would have thought the system would at least power up and try
to POST (Power On Self Test) which yours has done. I would have
*expected* it to at least power up if it was the BIOS, but I never
nailed it down absolutely.

If a BIOS upgrade doesn't work, then I'd try the switching the PS.
Either get one with a lot of muscle, or get one that's audequate but
that isn't as sensitive to power fluctuations if you're confident in
your computer skills. Supposedly, the Radeons tend to trip some of the
more expensive regulators on some power supplies.

If push comes to shove, you could buy your AIW from a local computer
store and just ask casually ask them to install it. Then let them
figure it out. Around here at least, prices on parts are pretty
competative with many of them.

Hope some of this helps.

I took the card out and replaced it with my old Rage Pro and the screen is
still blank when booting up.
Looking at the power supply it is:
Switching Power Supply.. ATX-25S400W-CPIV. Voltage 115/230, Current 10a/15a.
Frequency 60/50Hz

In putting my 9800SE card in on the hottest day on the year, a drop of
sweat fell onto the motherboard. Bang goes motherboard and PSU. Card
survived though.

Did you try to make a claim on your household insurance?
Derek.

I don't think that I am covered for my own stupidity. As it was I
replaced the case and PSU with a much nicer one and swapped my K7S5A
with an L7S7A2.

Are you are covered for accidental damage?
Derek.
