ATI Radeon 8500DV problem

I have an ATI Radeon 8500DV All inWonder, using XP, and have just
downloaded the latest drivers from ATI, including the WDW TV capture
drivers, but have not yet installed them. The reason for downloading
is that I lost the ATI DVD player facility a while ago after updating
my Microsoft Media Player to V9.0. Now I have re-installed the ATI
driver set from the original CD, again several times, and the DVD
player has finally returned, but now I have lost the TV
tuner! The initialisation wizard fails as I can't select a region at
step 1 as the pull down list is empty.
Before I install the new ATI drivers, I understand the old ones have
to be de-installed first. So if anyone out there knows that if after
removing the old drivers, I can still view the output via the ATI
card, or will I have to connect the video cable to the on-board video
card before installing the new ATI drivers. If so, I'm not even sure
if the on board card has been disabled as I bought the PC with the ATI
card already installed. I've printed off all the installation guides
for the new drivers and the first thing mentioned is to de-install all
current drivers. Can someone assure me please that I will still be
able to see a display before I proceed.

I believe from your headers that you are in the UK. If so, then I
believe you're encountering a known problem with the latest release of
DirectX 9 that affects not only ATI but many if not all other video
boards when using PAL.

Microsoft has a hotfix available,
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=8dfd1b6d-e177
-4a0e-91d0-b4310675b02b&displaylang=en> or go to the Microsoft site and
search on keywords "directx pal".
