Blank screen on power-up

I have a Gateway laptop with a 40gb hd and 512 RAM.

I've had a problem similiar to this for quite awhile. Whenever the laptop
would go on standby, I could not get it off standby, so I would have to do a
manual shutdown and then turn it on again to use it. Not a big deal I thought.

Today, I had the same problem, but this time around when I turned it back on
the screen stayed blank. There was no POST, and the the windows screen never
showed up. It powered on, but the monitor display stayed blank, as if it was
still off. I've reseated the RAM and I've inserted a boot-disk, but I still
get the blank screen. I let it run off the battery and the AC, still nothing.
I find it hard to believe that my monitor would suddenly kick the bucket, so
I figure something else must be the cause of all this.

you didn't mention if you also used the keys that control the brightness of
the lcd display. On a rare occassion, by lcd appears to be blank from a
standby or hibernation. But simply pressing the keys to control the lcd or
sometimes running my finger over the mouse pad enables the view again.

On the other hand, I think that gateway and some others use lcd panels from
china that are not exacting to the specs of the laptops. But because they
are mass produced, they are cheap for the u.s. distributors to resell to the
manufacturer's in the u.s.. And we all should know by now how China loves
to copy products that look the same from the outside, but are not the same
on the inside.... Don't be surprised if the power inverter for you laptop
blew......
